Feel Confident in Your Own Skin
The skin is the largest organ in the body. It’s also the cornerstone of our first impressions, setting the stage for how we greet the world and how it greets us back, but skincare is about so much more than physical appearance. It’s about wellness. It means making sure that our skin is at its optimal condition so that it can support us in return.
Healthy skin is an essential building block of a healthy, happy life–and keeping our skin healthy is a highly individualized process. Let’s take a closer look at what medical skincare is and what it can mean for each of us.

Where Do You Even Begin?
There’s more information about skincare online than ever, which is both a blessing and a curse. For one, it means that you can access thousands of product recommendations and reviews in seconds. However, the widespread access to information can quickly become overwhelming and difficult to manage making it harder to find information that is tailored to you.
That’s why the best place to start when it comes to finding the right skincare regimen for yourself is by talking to a specialized provider who has years of experience in helping patients find medical skincare solutions that work for them. A licensed medical skincare provider will be able to take your skin’s unique needs into account while recommending products that will help, and not harm, it in the long run.

Laying Out Your Skincare Goals

At Gayoso Plastic Surgery and MedSpa, we believe that effective medical skincare starts with pinpointing the unique needs of your skin, then finding solutions that address those needs on top of a baseline of healthy daily habits and practices. In order to do this, we must identify a few key traits and qualities in your skin.
Skin type
Is your skin naturally oily, dry, or combination? By determining this, we can make recommendations that will fill in the gaps that your skin needs to thrive.
Your existing regimen
Do you typically skip moisturizer? When was the last time you applied sunscreen? What cleanser do you use? By determining what works and doesn’t in your current skincare routine, we’ll outline a game plan to give your skin whatever it’s missing.
Your “problem areas.”
Are you looking to treat acne? Maybe your goal is to reduce the appearance of wrinkles or prevent them altogether. From hyperpigmentation to fine lines, dark spots, and any other skincare goals, the ideal regimen will be tailored to bring about the results you want and need.
There’s No One-Size-Fits-All
No two skin types, textures, and sets of needs are the same. That’s because the tendencies and appearance of our skin can vary widely based on countless factors, including:
- Genetic predispositions
- Diet
- Activity levels
- Sun exposure
- The environments we live in
- The products we use
- And so much more.
Caring for our skin effectively means reaching a deep understanding of what our skin needs, which is usually best done under the guidance of a professional. Medical skincare can include cosmetic procedures, MedSpa treatments, and daily care routines. Skincare is unique for each person, that’s why our licensed aestheticians are here to help you determine which approach will achieve optimal results and support your skin’s health.

Approaching Individualized Skincare
Medical skincare works best when it’s tailored to your skin’s one-of-a-kind needs. What works perfectly for one person’s skin type may be terrible for another’s.
The key to effective skin care is, first and foremost, understanding the general best practices for effective skin care, then using those as a baseline to further investigate and implement the habits that work best for your skin.

General Best Practices
Medical skincare, like diet, exercise, and any other lifestyle application, is best when it’s fine-tuned over time and preferably under the guidance of a specialist. With that said, it is helpful to understand some general rules of thumb for effective skin care to set your skin up for success.
Regardless of age, background, and lifestyle, here are a few sets of do’s and don’ts that anyone can follow when starting your skincare journey.
Skincare Do’s
Using SPF daily. Sun exposure has a variety of benefits, including delivering vitamin D and being associated with reduced stress and depression levels. However, its adverse effects shouldn’t be underplayed: wrinkles, premature aging, sunburns, and skin cancer are all common effects of unprotected sun exposure. To reap the benefits of the sun while minimizing the risks, be sure to apply sunscreen daily and reapply every hour when enjoying the sunshine.
Drink plenty of water. Water is your skin’s best friend. It helps to balance out our skin’s oil levels, prevents dryness and flaking, and detoxifies the skin. Plenty of water is a fundamental ingredient to healthy, happy skin.
Eat a balanced diet. We’re not saying that you should never indulge in sweets or fried food. However, it’s also important to make sure that you’re getting enough vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in your diet every day. This will help maintain your skin’s hydration and elasticity, all while preventing excess oil production.
Keep it clean. We don’t just mean washing your face daily; we mean ensuring that anything that comes into contact with your face is as clean as possible, whether it’s a cellphone, makeup brush, or your hand. Avoid introducing countless germs and oils to sensitive skin by being diligent about cleaning anything that touches it.
Skincare Don’ts
Avoid touching your face. Our hands come into contact with countless oils, bacteria, and other debris every minute. Though touching our faces is normal and borderline instinctive, it’s a good idea to be aware of it and to minimize it as much as possible, especially when it comes to touching blemishes. Doing so can cause oils and germs to spread throughout our skin, doing far more harm than good.
Don’t wear makeup overnight. Sleep is restorative for more than just the brain. It’s also an opportunity for our skin to breathe, and makeup can seriously impede that process. Leaving makeup on for too long can lead to acne, clogged pores, and irritation.
Avoid fragrances. Makeup and skincare products that have artificial fragrances in their ingredient lists can easily irritate the skin, causing rashes, acne, and itching. Avoid introducing fragrances to your skin to keep it as happy and healthy as possible.
Don’t smoke or drink in excess. Any amount of smoking cigarettes will significantly damage your skin, introducing toxins, dehydrating it, and speeding up the development of wrinkles. The same can be said of drinking in excess, which dehydrates the skin and leads to premature aging.
Keep Healthy Habits. You don’t have to completely cut out french fries or happy hours with friends. However, to make the most of your skin’s health and appearance, it’s a good idea to be mindful of your daily habits.

Acne Treatment
Acne can have a huge effect on a person’s self-esteem. There are plenty of misconceptions out there about acne, starting with its causes. Acne can occur for a variety of reasons, including hormones, stress, allergies, diet, medications, and so much more.
Wrinkle Treatments
Whether you’re looking to reduce the appearance of wrinkles that already exist or are interested in preventing them from appearing, good skincare habits are one of your biggest allies. Preventing and improving the appearance of wrinkles can involve a variety of approaches, including topical treatments, injectables, lasers, and surgeries.
The course of treatment that’s right for you will depend on a variety of factors, including how averse you are to invasive procedures, how long you have to recover, and how deep-set your wrinkles are.
Medical Skincare Recommendations
Our goal is to help patients protect the health of their skin and preserve its youthful appearance by recommending the most effective and high-quality products available. The products we recommend accomplish a variety of goals, including:
- Sun protection
- Wrinkle prevention
- Collagen production stimulation
- Smoothing
- And more
- SkinBetter Science
- Alastin
- Skinceuticals

Optional Skin Care Procedures
While all skin care products are optional, some are more strongly recommended by physicians than others. High-quality SPF, an antioxidant serum, and topically applied form of vitamin a are among the daily skincare staples that most professionals would recommend. With that said, they are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to skincare. Patients who are interested in more extensive, fast-acting, or aggressive options may also consider:
- Facials, peels, and lasers, for faster-acting treatment of problem areas.
- Dermal fillers: these are gel-like substances that are injected into the skin to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, add fullness to specific areas, and bring volume to the skin.
- Botox: which prevents the habitual muscle movements in the face that cause wrinkles over time.
- Facial Surgeries: including face lifts, brow lifts, rhinoplasties, and more.
