Regain Your Confidence

Your chin brings balance to your face’s features and defines your overall shape. If your chin, jawline, or side profile is an area you’d like to improve, a chin augmentation can do that for you. At Gayoso Plastic Surgery and MedSpa, we offer chin augmentation to improve your proportions and enhance a smaller or diminished chin.

What Chin Augmentation Can Do For You

A chin augmentation is a surgery that can add projection to the chin and elongate the jawline. Our goal is to make your facial features more defined and proportional, while also addressing your specific needs. We customize our procedures to fit you, and here are some of the areas we can treat for you:

Correct dimples in the chin
Elongate the jawline
Enhance a recessed chin
Improve side profile
Lengthen the face
Improve Symmetry

Our chin augmentation procedure is not a chin reduction. We use implants to give you the results you desire. Your goals for your chin augmentation are unique to you and will be discussed at your consultation.

Mentoplasty v. Genioplasty

Chin Augmentation

While chin augmentation is the common term for the procedure, you might also hear the terms mentoplasty and genioplasty. While these two terms are similar, their meanings can differ. Generally, a mentoplasty is a catch-all term for any surgery that involves the chin. A genioplasty might only refer to a chin reduction or reshaping. Our chin augmentation procedure is not a genioplasty. We use implants to increase and define the chin. Depending on the practice, these terms might describe the same procedure. To keep things simple, we only use the term chin augmentation to describe our chin surgery procedure at Gayoso Plastic Surgery and MedSpa.

What to Expect at Your Consultation

What sets us apart from other plastic surgery practices is that we listen to you. We want to know your goals, concerns, and priorities so we can help you achieve the results you want. Once we get to know your desired outcome, your provider can recommend the best option for your chin augmentation and guide you through the procedure.

During this time, your provider will also ask you questions about your medication list, health history, and previous surgeries. For your safety, it’s important to answer your provider honestly, as any unknown health issues could impair your recovery. We want to make sure your chin augmentation is right for you. If there is a concern for your safety, we might advise against a chin augmentation. In this case, your provider will recommend alternative options to help you achieve your goals without risking your health.

Chin Implants

A chin augmentation is about adding volume and dimension to the chin. We achieve this by using chin implants. Chin implants can increase the size or projection of a diminished chin that isn’t proportional to the face or forehead. We use silicone and fat grafting for our chin implants. Our silicone implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit your desired look.

How your surgeon places the implants depends on your face structure and where you want the definition. Chin implants can be placed through one of two incisions: inside the mouth or beneath the chin. We want you to be informed every step of the way, so your provider will discuss which location works best for you before your procedure.

Chin Augmentation

These types of implants include:

Side of the Chin

These implants can widen the face and define the jawline. You can even discuss using implants to improve asymmetry with your provider. Whatever your goals are, your provider will work with you to achieve them.

Point of Chin

It can be used to also define the jawline, elongate the jaw, and make a recessed chin more pronounced. These implants can also slightly change the shape of your chin if you want it to be more pointed, curved, or square. You will discuss this with your provider at your consultation, and they can recommend the right implant to achieve your goals.

Chin Augmentation Procedure

After discussing your goals, health history, and options at your consultation, your provider will also walk you through the procedure that is customized to you and your goals. At your first pre-op appointment, you will meet with a nurse who will go over your health history, medications, and previous surgeries to ensure there are no complications. Then, the nurse will go over your pre-and post-op care instructions and answer any questions you might have.

At your second pre-op, you will meet with your surgeon. They will explain your procedure and answer any questions or concerns you may have. On the day of your chin augmentation, you will meet with the OR nurses who will prepare you for surgery. During this time, your surgeon will make any necessary markings and address any last minute questions or concerns. You will also talk over any previous anesthesia issues with the anesthesiologist before your surgery.

Chin augmentations are outpatient procedures. For your safety and comfort, you are required to have someone drive you to and from the surgery. They should also spend the first night with you to make sure there are no complications. We encourage you to talk to your provider if you have any questions or concerns about your chin augmentation procedure. We want to help you feel confident when taking the next step forward.

Other Procedures

We customize every chin augmentation to fit our patient’s wants and needs. Sometimes that means combining additional procedures to achieve the results you want. It’s not uncommon for patients to ask for submental liposuction along with their chin augmentation. This addition reduces fullness in the neck and enhances the chin. If you are also interested in combining submental liposuction with your procedure, you can ask your provider about your options during your consultation.

Dermal fillers are a common alternative to chin augmentation. This non-surgical procedure temporarily increases the volume of your chin for anywhere from nine to twenty-four months. While a chin augmentation is permanent, you can dissolve the fillers if don’t like the results. If you are new to plastic surgery, this can be a great option to explore what you want. Your provider might also recommend fillers if you are unsure about committing to a chin augmentation.

Chin Augmentation Risks

For every procedure, we provide honesty and transparency. You should know all the facts so you can make an informed decision. That is why you and your provider will discuss all potential risks associated with chin augmentation at your consultation. As always, your safety comes first. Our board-certified plastic surgeons take every precaution to reduce the likelihood of any complications. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the risks, we encourage you to discuss them with your provider at your consultation. We want you to feel as confident and comfortable as possible when moving forward to the next step.

Recovering After Your Chin Augmentation

Recovering After Your Chin Augmentation

After your surgery, you will have a scheduled post-op to monitor how you are healing. It’s common to experience temporary swelling and mild pain after chin augmentation. Generally, most of our patients can return to work within a week, but everyone heals in their own time and in their own way. Your provider will recommend that you refrain from any strenuous activity for one month. That can include yoga, pilates, and any other activities that can increase blood flow to the face. After six months you should be able to see the full results of your chin augmentation. At this time, you will return for an appointment to see your newly defined results side-by-side with your before and after photos.
