Questions About Breast Implants
If you have questions about breast implants, we can answer them. Our board-certified plastic surgeons have the knowledge you need to make a safe and informed decision.
What Are Breast Implants?
Breast implants have a shell made of silicone rubber that is filled with either silicone gel or saline solution. They can be used in either breast augmentation or breast reconstruction to increase the volume of a woman’s breasts.
Am I a Good Candidate For Breast Implants?
If you are at least 18 years old (or 22 years old for silicone breast implants) and want to increase the size of your breasts, you may be a good candidate for breast implants. It is important that you are not pregnant or nursing, and are in generally good health with no untreated malignant or premalignant breast cancers. During your breast augmentation consultation, your provider will review your health history along with any previous surgeries and current medications to ensure you will have a safe and smooth surgery and recovery.
How Long Will It Take Me To Recover From Breast Implant Surgery?
Everyone heals at their own pace, but for most patients, recovery from breast implant surgery tends to be relatively short. Often, patients feel recovered enough to return to most normal activity in 3-5 days, although your provider will advise against strenuous exercise and other vigorous activities for up to four weeks. It’s natural to experience swelling after your surgery, so you may not see your full results until six months after your surgery. Following all your postoperative instructions will help to ensure your recovery is as quick as possible.
Will I Lose Sensation in My Breasts with implants?
Some women are concerned that they will lose sensation in their breasts due to surgery. Loss of sensation is a risk of breast augmentation, but it is not due to the surface-level incision. Instead, it is associated with the creation of the pocket for the breast implant, and all incision locations have a similarly low risk for a loss of breast sensation. If you’re worried about a loss of sensation, we encourage you to discuss your concerns with your provider.
Do My Implants Have To Be Replaced Every Ten Years?
No. If your implants become damaged or deflated, we can schedule you for an implant replacement, but if your implants are still intact, most plastic surgeons will not recommend any surgery. The implants’ age alone is not enough to merit replacement, as with surgery come risks. If you are happy with the appearance of your implants you should not have surgery.

Is Breast Implant Surgery Painful?
Most patients only report relatively minor discomfort from their breast implant surgery. During the procedure, we provide anesthesia to ease any discomfort. After the procedure, you will be given pain medication, but most of our patients only take these medications for a few days.
Will I Have Stretch Marks On My Breasts?
Anytime the skin stretches, there is a risk it might develop stretch marks; however, the risk of stretch marks appearing on your breasts is low.
Will Breast Implants Make My Areolas Bigger?
No. If you already have large areolas, they may appear larger if the breast is fuller because more of the areola is presented.
