If you are considering liposuction to improve your figure by removing stubborn fat deposits that do not respond to exercise and dieting, it is important to understand the procedure, including recovery. The liposuction procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure, but it is important to allow your body the time it needs to recover. Here’s what you need to know to prepare for your liposuction recovery.

The Day of Your Procedure

After your liposuction procedure, we will take you to our recovery area. There, you will be monitored to ensure you are recovering properly from the anesthesia. You will go home in a compression garment and will be provided a second one at your first post-op. It is also a good idea to wear compression stockings during the first couple weeks of your recovery. You will not be allowed to drive after your procedure. To put your safety first, you should have a responsible adult drive you home and stay with you at least the first night. We will go over detailed post-surgical instructions with you and your caretaker.

On the day of your procedure, you should focus on rest and recovery. You should be up and walking around the house when you come home from surgery. You are allowed to eat, and you should drink water to avoid dehydration. You may not be able to eat full meals, so have small protein-rich foods or snacks available.

The First Week of Your Liposuction Recovery

Expect to take a week off from work and refrain from strenuous activities for four weeks. Your results will begin to be visible within a couple of weeks, but your final results will not be visible for up to six months after surgery. During this time, it’s important to remember to take your prescribed medications according to instructions. Although you should be gradually increasing your level of activity, you should refrain from strenuous activity.

At the end of this first week, you will return to the office for a follow-up visit with the nurse. At this visit we will remove all compression, bandages and look at everything to make sure there are no concerns, answer any questions, and discuss the next steps of your recovery.

Full Liposuction Recovery and Final Results

Once you return to work, you may feel normal, but it is important to remember that you are not yet fully recovered. You will still have to refrain from strenuous exercise for up to four to six weeks. You will also continue wearing compression garments for one month during your liposuction recovery. Your initial results will be visible within a week or two, but your contour will continue to improve throughout the healing process. The final results may not be visible for up to six months after the procedure.
